Casa de Cultura Mario Quintana

The Casa de Cultura Mario Quintana (CCMQ), originally Hotel Majestic, is a historic Brazilian building and cultural center of the city of Porto Alegre, one of the largest and best equipped in Brazil. The Hotel Majestic had its peak in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. During this period it had as guests great names in politics, such as former presidents Getúlio Vargas and Jango Goulart, and the artistic world such as Vicente Celestino, Virginia Lane and Francisco Alves. The House was named in honor of one of the greatest Brazilian poets, Mário Quintana, born in the city of Alegrete in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, but who adopted Porto Alegre as his city of heart. The writer lived in the hotel between 1968 and 1980, in apartment 217. The house accommodates a wide variety of cultural spaces, such as the Lucília Minssen Library, the Érico Veríssimo Library, part of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Rio Grande do Sul, the Acervos Elis Regina and Mário Quintana, the Public Discotheque Natho Henn, the Xico Stockinger and Sotero Cosme Galleries, the Bruno Kiefer and Carlos Carvalho theaters, as well as three movie theaters, cafés, bombonière, bookstore and numerous rooms with specific destinations. multiple use. In 2002, the José Lutzenberger Garden was installed on the terrace of the fifth floor of the CCMQ, in honor of the environmentalist who died that year. The garden gathers species of plants from the plains, the deserts, the prairies and the tropics. The vases and baths of the old Majestic hotel, previously unused, have gained usefulness for landscaping the space.
