Chalé da Praça

The Chalet of Praça XV is one of the most traditional bars and restaurants in Porto Alegre. It is located in the Historic Center of the city, in Praça XV de Novembro, close to the Public Market and the Municipal Palace. Not even the historians can say for sure if the current building of the XV Place Chalet was built in Porto Alegre or if it came dismantled from Europe, a custom at the time. On August 22, 1884, it was planned to build a kiosk for the commercialization of ice cream and beverages. In 1885, the first license for occupation of the Chalet was given. The Chalet was manufactured in steel frame, wood and glass. It was inaugurated on November 22, 1885. In addition to being the ideal place to rest after a day’s work, it remind us of Germany, since the large German colony was their main public. In 1909, a “restaurant pavilion” was built to replace the old Chalet. In 1911, the municipal public power rebuilt the building. The second reform happened in 1971 after a fire. Already in precarious conservation conditions, on September 19, 1997, the Permission of Use Agreement with the permission holder was revoked. On June 25, 1998, the Chalet was registered by the Municipal Historic Patrimony, which strengthened the purposes of its conservation. Today, the Chalet has capacity for 310 people, including the outside, being specialized in regional and international cuisines.
