Viaduto Otávio Rocha

The Otávio Rocha Viaduct was inaugurated in 1932. The works began in 1926, during the term of Otávio Rocha (1924-1928), although they were already foreseen in the Master Plan of 1914. The decision to open Avenida Borges de Medeiros, connecting the center to the south part of the city, and build the Viaduct was Otávio Rocha and the President of the State, Borges de Medeiros. At that time, the number of citizens did not exceed 200 thousand. One of the postcards of Porto Alegre, located at the intersection of Borges de Medeiros and Duque de Caxias, the exuberant Viaduct Otávio Rocha houses record stores, snack bars, silversmiths, shoe shops, barbershops, flower shops and handicrafts under its arches and staircases. It is not a simple overpass for the passage of cars and pedestrians, since it has, on both sides of the avenue, wide access stairs to the upper level of the viaduct. On September 19, 2008, a municipal law determined that the upper public space of the Otávio Rocha Viaduct was to be called the “Four Seasons Ride”. Each of the four staircases was identified by signs with the names of the seasons:
– Summer Tour – starting at Jerônimo Coelho Street and ending at Rua Duque de Caxias, right side of the Viaduct, in the north-south direction,
– Autumn Tour – starting at Jerônimo Coelho Street and ending at Rua Duque de Caxias, on the left side of the Viaduct, heading north-south,
– Winter Tour – starting at Duque de Caxias Street and ending at Coronel Fernando Machado Street, right side of the Viaduct, north-south direction,
– Spring Tour – starting at Duque de Caxias Street and ending at Coronel Fernando Machado Street, on the left side of the Viaduct, heading north-south.
